1H-Imidazolium, 1-(carboxymethyl)-4,5-dihydro-1(or 3)-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-undecyl-, hydroxide, monosodium salt - Introduction
sodium 1-(carboxymethyl)-4,5-dihydroxy-1 (or 3)-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-undecyl-1H-imidazolium hydroxide (abbreviated as DSS) is a cationic surfactant, it has good surface activity and surface adsorption properties. It is a special structure of amine compounds, with carboxylic acid and imidazole ring structure, undecyl chain containing 2-hydroxyethyl. DSS is soluble in water and forms micellar structures in the aqueous phase.
The main use of DSS is as a calibrator and thickener in electrophoresis buffers in biochemical and molecular biology experiments. It can increase the viscosity of the buffer during electrophoresis, reduce the diffusion of ion migration, and can provide a stable pH range. In addition, DSS can also be used to dissolve proteins and improve the accuracy of electrophoretic separation.
The preparation method of DSS is mainly obtained by the reaction of hydroxide and the corresponding alkyl imidazolium chloride salt. The sodium salt form of DSS is then obtained by reaction with sodium carbonate.
Regarding safety information, DSS are generally low-toxic substances, but they still need to be used with caution. When using DSS, the experimental practice should be followed and direct contact with skin and eyes should be avoided. In the case of accidental contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice if necessary. In addition, DSS should be stored in a dry, cool place, away from inflammables and oxidizing agents.
